Amy Mullen '02 Dances Away with Top Honors at Intercollegiate Dance Festival

Sweet Briar senior Amy Mullen earned the top honors from among 57 entries representing 30 colleges and universities on Tuesday, March 26, at the American College Dance Festival Association Mid-Atlantic Regional Festival for her original dance, "Groove."

During the preliminary rounds, student dancers perform for a panel of judges who select the best to perform the following night at the Festival Gala. "Groove" was one of eleven dances selected.

Following the Festival Gala, the judges selected Mullen as the "Best Performer" and "Best Choreographer," and she was invited to perform "Groove" at the 10th National College Dance Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts May 13-15, 2002.

"This is big. Winning 'Best Performer' was big. Winning 'Best Choreographer' was big. Winning them both in one night was unprecedented, but going to perform at the Kennedy Center is huge - beyond big. This is the biggest thing to happen to the Dance Program at Sweet Briar since it began," said Ella Magruder, professor of dance.

"It is like winning the Oscar for best actor and best director at the same time," added Mark Magruder, professor of dance.
