German and Sociology Major Awarded Competitive Scholarship for Study in Germany

Sweet Briar sophomore Karlena Sakas, Springfield, Va., was awarded a prestigious German Academic Exchange Program edu.de Scholarship to study sociology at the University of Bamberg during academic year 2003-2004.

Based on her outstanding academic record and convincing and feasible project proposal, Sakas was selected for the scholarship by an independent selection committee. She is a double major in sociology and German.

"These are very competitive scholarships. In fact, this is the third year in a row that we’ve helped students apply for the award and all that hard work has finally paid off," said Tiffany Cummings, director of international studies at Sweet Briar.

A student and advisee of Ron Horwege, professor of German, Sakas is a Commonwealth Scholar and an Honors Scholar for 2003-2004; a member of the dean's list; Delta Phi Alpha, the national German honor society; Alpha Lambda Delta, the national freshman scholastic honorary; French Club; and Kaleidoscope; the president of the German Club; a resident assistant; a teacher in the Saturday Enrichment Program; a disc jockey for WNRS-FM; a former member of the sub-varsity swim team; and a tour guide for the Office of Admissions.

This summer, under the auspices of a Sweet Briar College Honors Summer Research Program grant, Sakas will study eco-feminism as a social movement in the United States and Germany.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers edu.de Undergraduate Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany. The scholarship, worth 7,000 Euros (approximately $8,000), provides a monthly stipend, as well as payment for travel, insurance and books.
