Atlanta Campaign Celebration a Huge Success
Thursday, April 10, 2003

On Wednesday, April 9, 127 alumnae, parents and friends gathered to celebrate Our Campaign For Her World in the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Nancy Hall Green '64, chair of the campaign, announced that $64.5 million in gifts and pledges to the campaign had been received, over sixty percent of the campaign goal of $102 million.

"Tonight, we celebrate an unprecedented, comprehensive fundraising effort - the largest ever in the 100-plus year history of the College," said Green. "Our Campaign For Her World is the means by which we will fulfill our bold dreams to make Sweet Briar highly competitive for years to come, a model for women's education, and a place ahead of its time."

Guests visited in the recently renovated Atlanta Botanical Garden, home of some of the most beautiful and unusual flora in the region. As a part of this special evening, two features of the garden were available to guests prior to cocktails: The Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory, which houses rare and endangered plants from tropical rainforests and desert regions and The Fuqua Orchid Center, which houses a High Elevation House, a Tropical Display House and a Center for Education and Conservation.

The focal point of the evening was a special dinner celebrating the ambitious campaign effort to enhance Sweet Briar's capacity to serve her world in the 21st century. Sarah Hitch Hill '63 delivered the invocation and Dr. Jonathan Green and President Elisabeth Muhlenfeld were featured speakers.

"Our Campaign for Her World will ensure that the Sweet Briar experience will continue to give women the intellectual substance and practical confidence to extend the frontiers of their professions, advance the greater good in their communities across boundaries, across national borders, and across time," said President Muhlenfeld. "My most heartfelt gratitude goes to all of you who are enabling the Sweet Briar women of tomorrow to lead truly remarkable lives."

The campaign will emphasize a mix of endowment, facility, scholarship and program objectives. In addition, it will seek to strengthen the College's Annual Fund.

The next regional campaign celebration will be held on Monday, June 2, 2003 in Washington, D.C. The College also plans to host more regional campaign events in the fall of 2003.
