LAWS 201 (3) Foundations of Law and Society An introduction to the themes and methodologies of the interdisciplinary study of law in social context. Topics include the origins of law, legal systems and norms of dispute resolution and adjudication. Case studies will utilize comparative perspectives on the major issues of law in society. This course cannot be taken on a P/CR/NC grading option. V7 LAWS 202 (3) Legal Theory and Public Policy What is the nature of justice? What is law? What are rights? How do they influence public policy? This class is an introduction to major theories and perspectives in jurisprudence and how these different normative and empirical traditions shape both how public policy is formed and evaluated. Case studies will utilize comparative perspectives on the major issues of legal theory and public policy. This course cannot be taken on a P/CR/NC grading option. LAWS 261 (1) Directed Study Selected topics purused by individual students or small groups of students under supervision of a member of the department. LAWS 352 (3) Social Movements and the Law This course examines how law acts both instrumentally and constitutively in social organization by examining law as an instrument and symbol of legitimacy, as well as a means of social control and dispute resolution. The seminar will take comparative perspectives of different societies and historical periods and culminate in the student's preparation of a major research project. This course cannot be taken on a P/CR/NC grading option. LAWS 361 (1) Special Study Selected topics pursued by individual students or small groups of students under supervision of a member of the department. LAWS 377 (1) Internship LAWS 461 (1) Independent Study Selected topics pursued by individual students or small groups of students under supervision of a member of the department.
