GNDR 101 (3) Intro to Gender Studies This course will survey issues that preoccupied many of the key figures in the 19th- and 20th-century women's movements in the United States and traces the growth of these movements into a field of academic study. It will also introduce several of the theoretical approaches that have developed out of feminist studies, including queer, ethnic, and masculinity studies. V5 GNDR 102 (3) Introduction to Gender Studies This course introduces students to a variety of perspectives on the study of gender and sexualities. It will feature a series of guest lectures from faculty on how gender studies is approached in their disciplines. The course instructor will coordinate the guest lectures and provide continuity over the semester, helping students to compare and integrate the lectures and readings through class discussion, writing assignments, and their own projects and presentations. IIIO, V GNDR 205 (3) Gender, Sexuality & Identity This course investigates the social construction of gender and sexuality. Studentss will read narratives that conceptualize identity, desire, and the body. In addition to theoretical and historical essays drawn from contemporary sexuality studies, course materials may include fiction, autobiography, memoir, and film. V5 GNDR 272 (3) Topics in Gender Studies Topics will vary by semester. May be repeated with permission when the content changes. Topic for Spring 2009: "Women and Gender in Biblical Literature." A seminar centered on reading recent works in feminist biblical interpretation. Biblical sources will include the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, and Quran, as well as supplemental materials from the ancient Near East. Emphasis will be placed primarily upon classroom dialog arising from the reading list. The course will examine the experience of women in the ancient Near East, the diverse roles women play in biblical narrative, and the variety of modern interpretations of those ancient materials. GNDR 340 (3) Topics in Gender Studies This course provides an opportunity for students to explore a particular topic in gender studies. Topics will vary by semester. May be repeated for credit with permission when the content changes.
