Jean Hazelwood has been hired as new Director of Athletic Facilities at Sweet Briar College. Jean will be in charge of the new 53,000 square foot Fitness and Athletic Center along with the Daisy Williams Gymnasium and all outdoor facilities.
She is a graduate of R-MWC where she was a member of both the varsity soccer and basketball teams. After R-MWC she earned her master's of education in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg University. Jean has had many years of experience in the field. She was an intern at Brown University, where she served as an event manager for the university's varsity athletic department. She also served as the facility and equipment manager, assisting in the daily operation of the athletic facilities and managing game day operations for 25 varsity sports at Vassar College before returning to R-MWC as Director of Athletic Facilities.
Director of Athletics Kelly Morrison said, “It will be nice to have Jean on board with us as we open our new fitness and athletic center. Jean understands the value of Women’s college education, and she will be a leader and a good role model for our young women. Jean will be working with a number of our colleagues on campus so it will be to our advantage that she can hit the ground running."
FACILITIES
Babcock Athletic Fields
The Babcock Athletic Fields are home to the SBC soccer and lacrosse teams. The facility features two large bermuda grass fields. The hillside spanning both fields gives ample seating to fans and offers them an unique view of the game.
Boathouse Road Field
The Boathouse Road Field is home to SBC hockey. The facility is currently receiving a new drainage and sprinkler system and will be ready for the start of hockey this fall.
Gymnasium Tennis Courts
The Sweet Briar tennis facility, one of the finest tennis facilities in the southern region, features 14 beautiful outdoor tennis courts. The facility has hosted two national tournaments and several Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships. Seven of the 14 courts were resurfaced in the fall of 2005.
Prothro Natatorium
The Prothro Natatorium is home to SBC Swimming. The 25-meter facility features six competition lanes and ample deck space for home swim meets. A balcony with seating for spectators overlooks the pool.
Vixen Softball Field
The newest athletic competition facility on campus, the Vixen softball field was completed in time for the first ODAC softball game in the spring of 2006. Dugouts were added in the spring of 2008, making this field one of the finest in the conference.
Williams Gymnasium
The Williams Gymnasium is home to Vixen volleyball.
The gymnasium has seating for a couple hundred fans in the balcony overlooking the court.
The facility also features the Prothro Natatorium, an aerobics room, a free-weight room, cardiovascular and cybex equipment, newly renovated locker rooms and team rooms, and a basketball court. The physical education and athletics department offices are also housed here.
